Arthur Tillinghast Huston

1894-1964

Arthur Tillinghast Huston

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Arthur graduated from Columbia University and served as a cavalry captain overseas during World War I. He had a paid singing job in a New York City church choir and wanted to pursue a singing career, but his father would not allow it.

Arthur joined the Fleischmann Co. in New York where he served in sales promotion until moving to Georgia in 1926 to help his father run the Butler Island Plantation which his father had newly purchased. When his father died in 1938, Arthur continued to run the business.

After WWII, the business collapsed and Arthur and his wife, Isabelle, moved to Washington, DC to a job with the Dairy Corporation. With a change of government, however, he lost this job.

Arthur divided his time between New York, Pennsyvania and Flemington, NJ, after retirement in 1948 until 1956 when he and his wife Isabelle returned to St. Simons Island, Georgia. They maintained an apartment in Flemington, NJ, in addition to their home on 10th Street, East Beach.

He was a member of the Brunswick, GA, Rotary Club and the Flemington, NJ, Lions Club. He was a communicant of Christ Episcopal Church, Frederica, GA.

Much more information about Arthur will be added in time. This website is a work-in-progress.
