Emily Jayne Johnson

Emily, aged 80
Emily was born to William H. Johnson and Marietta Lyon Johnson in a house on the square in Union, New Jersey. It was there that Emily first met Addison Ely who came into the Johnson household as a boarder in 1872, the year he came to teach school in Union. They were married in 1874, and moved to Caldwell, New Jersey, where Addison became school principal.
The young couple moved to Rutherford in 1878. Addison became principal of the one school in the township, a community of some 1,000 persons.[1]
Over a 23 year period, Emily gave birth to 11 children. All except for her twin son Jared survived to adulthood – quite an accomplishment for that time – but she outlives three of her grown sons who die middle-aged.
